One week down in 2017, and how are your new year’s resolutions holding up? We all do it every year, resolve to make ourselves better, faster, stronger, smarter, etc. It is a daily struggle for everyone to deal with our weaknesses, some people are just better at hiding it then others and some demons are a bit more ferocious than their counterparts. Sometimes we convince ourselves that a pinch of denial and a dash of sheer determination is all it takes to make our lives picture perfect but unfortunately that’s not quite how it works. Life is hard, and it always will be. So then, how do we make 2017 better than 2016? By learning to struggle well! Struggle Well, Live Well is a guide to navigating life’s good, bad, and in-between. This isn’t a self help book exactly, it’s more of a frank accumulation of opinions and observations made by Dr. Kevin Gilliand after thirty years of working in mental healthcare. Dr. Gilliand provides insight on a few major causes of conflict— marital problems, alcohol addiction, sex addiction, anxiety and worry, relationship issues, trauma, grief, body image, depression, and dependencies. Moreover, Struggle Well, Live Well takes an extremely candid and straight-forward approach to conveying its message which I find refreshing. This year I want to be able to breath more, I want to be happier and learn to deal with my stress so I don’t always feel crushed by it. Maybe more importantly, I want to become a better friend, one that can be compassionate and help others when they need me. Struggle Well, Live Well has already taught me so much about how to deal with internal struggles, and I know I can apply it to my relationship with others. Pick up Struggle Well, Live Well and enhance not only your life but the lives of those around you, lets make 2017 a better year for all of us!
