Over 180 years of culture, pride and history have been built into the city of Houston. Why do people choose this city? And why do they stay? Nicknamed the “Bayou City,” “Space City,” “H-Town,” and “the 713,” Houston has become a global city, known for its culture, medicine and research. Houston, titled as the fourth most populous city in the United States, is composed of various ethnic and religious groups as well as a large and growing international community. This city has been described as the most racially diverse major metropolis in the country. Founded on the muddy banks of the confluence of White Oak and Buffalo Bayous in 1836, Houston has always been about the money. Incorporated as a city on June 5, 1837, it briefly served as the capital of the Texas Republic and has since grown steadily into a regional trading center for the remainder of the 19th century.
The founding developers made exaggerated claims about navigable waters, rolling hills and fresh ocean breezes, and young men came to fight for Texas’ independence from Mexico for a promised bounty of land as well as for the more nebulous dream of a grand new beginning. Ever since, people have continued to emigrate because of our reputation for opportunity. But once they’re here, they discover what really makes this town tick—the colorful culture incubated by the continual influx of citizens from every corner of the earth.
In an accessible timeline packed with intriguing images, Mud and Money by Mike Vance provides you with the people, places and tales that are integral to understanding the story of Houston. Add this new book to your home collection to learn more about this great metropolis. If you consider Houston to be your home, or have always been curious about its humble beginnings, Mud and Money will deliver a fascinating and educational experience while incorporating the natural rhythm that pulses in the heart of the city.
